The Leadership Shift No One Talks About but Everyone Needs
Apr 03, 2026
Last week, I shared a perspective from bestselling author Anne Grady that makes a positive impact on our leadership when we actually execute it.
Don’t try to motivate harder because that’s not the problem.
High performers don’t need more motivation.
They need a better operating system for uncertainty.
If you missed Part 1, here’s the quick recap of the first three shifts:
- Anchor decisions to values so people stop second-guessing
- Stop pushing and start clarifying because clarity fuels momentum
- Protect energy, not just time because focus follows energy
Those three alone can completely change how a team shows up but there are three more that might be even more powerful especially in the CRAZY world we’re leading in right now.
4. Eliminate Noise to Restore Focus
Let’s be honest. Most teams aren’t lacking in effort. They’re drowning in too much.
Too many meetings.
Too many priorities.
Too many things labeled “urgent.”
When everything feels important, nothing actually gets done well. Scattered attention creates scattered results.
One of the most practical leadership moves you can make right now is to reduce the noise.
That might look like:
- Canceling or shortening meetings that don’t drive outcomes
- Narrowing the team’s focus to fewer priorities
- Creating real space for uninterrupted work
Momentum doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from doing fewer things with greater focus which leads to greater IMPACT. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for?
5. Normalize Uncertainty Instead of Fighting It
This one is big and a little scary when you have no idea what could happen next.
As leaders, we often feel like it’s our job to remove uncertainty. Unfortunately, we are just mere mortals like everyone else.
NEWS ALERT: Here’s the reality: Uncertainty isn’t going anywhere.
When we pretend it is or try to eliminate it entirely, we actually make things harder on our teams.
They’re still feeling it but most people aren’t equipped to handle it.
Instead of fighting uncertainty, strong leaders normalize it.
They say things like:
- “We don’t have all the answers yet and that’s okay.”
- “Here’s what we do know.”
- “Here’s how we’ll make decisions as we move forward.”
That shift changes everything and builds confidence. Now the team isn’t waiting for certainty. They’re learning how to operate without it. When you combine that with clear values and priorities? Uncertainty becomes something manageable not something paralyzing. That is WORLD CHANGING MY FRIEND!
6. Ownership Drives Momentum
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this:
You can’t push people into sustained performance. I admit, I’ve tried and failed.
You might get short-term effort. You might get compliance. But you won’t get real momentum. Momentum comes from ownership.
When people feel like they own the work not just execute it they:
- Move faster
- Solve problems sooner
- Stay more engaged
- Care more about the outcome
I need to take a small squirrel moment here and talk a little about the fact that not every team member is willing to take ownership. There are those who push back because they’re afraid, unwilling, or I hate to say this, just unable. I just want to normalize that for you. I didn’t want to accept that for the longest time. I believe in everyone’s potential and that’s not wrong. My issue is I believed everyone had the SAME potential and unfortunately, that’s not reality. Ok, let’s get back to the main subject.
Instead of asking:
“Did you get it done?”
Shift to:
- “What do you think is the best approach here?”
- “Where do you see the biggest opportunity?”
- “What do you want to take ownership of?”
Ownership changes the energy completely. Now it’s not your push driving performance.
It’s their commitment. In my opinion there’s nothing more powerful than commitment.
The Real Leadership Shift
If you put both parts of this together, here’s what stands out:
This isn’t about doing more as a leader. It’s about doing different.
Instead of asking:
“How do I motivate my team?”
Start asking:
“What’s getting in the way of their momentum?”
When you:
- Anchor to values
- Create clarity
- Protect energy
- Eliminate noise
- Normalize uncertainty
- Build ownership
You don’t have to manufacture motivation. It shows up on its own.
Your team doesn’t need another pep talk. They need an environment where they can focus, decide, and move forward ESPECIALLY when things feel uncertain.
That’s the kind of leadership that doesn’t just get results. It builds teams that can handle anything.
